Old Town San Diego State Historic Park

Old Town San Diego State Historic Park

Several years ago, Gary and I visited this historic area, but there is so much to see and do that we were ready to go check it out again.

Busy shops with many items of interest
This site, settled by Spanish explorers in 1769, is considered the birthplace of California. The early settlement consisted of a fort and mission. From this location, 20 more missions were established in California.

Some of the old buildings, established gardens and trees
The current historic park has interpretive programs and public education representing the early days in California (from 1821-1872).
As we drove into the area of Old Town, we started to understand why this area was chosen for a settlement.  The lands are fairly flat, with a gentle slope toward the ocean and a backdrop to the east of protective hillsides.

Many of the historic buildings are maintained in the era and utility of their original usage (leather shop, carriage house, printer, etc.), while some areas have been subtly converted into shops with various artistic wares, clothing, gardening and, of course, restaurants.

Note the deep insets for the door and windows
Lots of color and plants - wonderful

We had a great time visiting and looking back into the Mexican-American lifestyle during the mid-19th century.

Like many other areas in San Diego, this park is dog friendly in all the outdoor areas, and many of the merchants also accepted leashed dogs.

Lunch was on a wonderful covered, outdoor patio area at Barra Barra Saloon.  Luna, Sammie and Moby all settled into a nap mode while their people had a wonderful sampling of Mexican entrees. Rested and fed, we then continued exploring the area some more.

Does this sculpture come with a gardener?
We discovered that lots of people really like Pembroke Welsh Corgis (maybe because they often appear with Queen Elizabeth?).  We were somewhat amazed how often we had to stop – maybe because there were 3 Corgis – for petting and pictures!  Of course, the dogs rather enjoyed the attention!

Maybe its their cute butts...
Even the merchants were calling them
Hey Nancy - we found a artistic board!
We thoroughly enjoyed the Old Town shops and historical buildings and definitely recommend this as a day trip if you spend some time visiting San Diego.
