Leaving the high tech world of NASA and entering a
wildlife refuge tends to "ground" me.
I know technological development has an important place in our world
today. However, what I love the most is
"getting back to nature". And,
there is no place better to be "grounded" than at Merritt Island
Wildlife Refuge.
Gary and I have visited this refuge several times during
trips to Florida and we never tire of it.
This land was set aside to provide privacy and security for the NASA
programs, but it, fortunately, is also an untampered (or nearly so) habitat for
many native plant and animal species, and also for many that visit here during
their annual migratory trips (original "snow birds"!!).
This time we focused our stops in the refuge at the
Visitor Center, the Black Point Wildlife Drive and the Scrub Ridge Trail.
Due to the cool weather, we did not see alligators
(though we have seen many during prior visits). Our rewards included seeing and
photographing many bird species and enjoying the large numbers of so many types
of birds.
This is primarily a pictorial post, so enjoy some of the
photos Gary took during our morning along the trails.

Fantastic bird photos! Especially the roseate spoonbill in flight.
ReplyDeleteThanks. Roseate Spoonbills are fascinating birds. We always enjoy seeing them at Merritt island. Hope you had a great time in the Phoenix area. Hope we can join you there someday.
